Top Electric Car Deals Under $40k in 2022

Electric vehicles (EVs) have been making headlines throughout 2022 and into 2023. New market entries, advances in battery technology, and the promise of at least partially autonomous driving seems to be starting to sway American consumers toward electric cars. Plus, government tax credits have sweetened potential electric car deals even more.

Looking at sales figures, in the second quarter of 2022, nearly 200,000 new EVs hit American roads, an increase of two-thirds over the same time in 2021. Those figures make the period between April and June 2022 the most successful for EV sales to date.

Saying that, U.S. consumers have been comparatively slow to get excited about plugging in rather than filling up. Compared to Europe and China, EV sales over here remain relatively low. However, even though the American car market may not qualify as an early adopter of EVs right now, new entrants to the market are changing consumer opinion and behavior.

Add to that the Biden administration’s package of subsidies for new EV purchases, and electric car deals are becoming more irresistible by the hour. If you’re at the stage of considering an EV purchase, here is a look at some of the top deals available for less than $40k.

Top Four EV Car Deals for Under $40k

  1. Chevrolet Bolt EUV and EV
  2. Nissan LEAF range
  3. Kia Niro EV
  4. Volkswagen ID.4

Chevrolet Bolt EUV and EV

We’ve all come to expect comfortable, reliable family cars from Chevy, and the electronic versions of their Bolt SUV and hatchback are just that – only battery-powered. The hatchback may look small, but its redesigned interior is roomier than you’d think at first sight. Higher-quality interiors and fully digital gauges on the latest model make it more desirable, too.

The EUV comfortably seats a family of five, but you may feel limited on cargo space. Both EVs have a range of around 250 miles on a single charge, and they offer semi-autonomous driving. At $31,500 and $33,500, both are excellent car deals for an electric family vehicle.

Nissan LEAF Range

Nissan’s LEAF range was the original EV trailblazer in the U.S. but has since lost out to competitors due to a lack of range and power. But, in 2022, Nissan is back offering two battery options. The smaller one will take you nearly 150 miles on a single charge, while the bigger one lasts more than 200 miles.

Consumers also get to choose between different levels of horsepower, making the electric car as powerful as you’d like it to be. One more thing in Nissan’s favor – at a starting price of $27,400, this is one of the most affordable EV options out there.

2022 Kia Niro EV

If you’re looking to combine a futuristic look with robust engineering and a long driving range, this may be the EV for you. Touchscreen displays and split-screen capabilities make this car feel like a truly 21st-century vehicle. Just a few years ago, the interior would not have been out of place in a sci-fi movie.

Back to driving in the real world! The Kia gives you nearly 240 miles of range, and just over 200 horsepower makes this a fun vehicle. Kia Niro car deals start from $39,990.

Volkswagen ID.4

Who wouldn’t like to drive AntMan’s car from the latest installation of Marvel adventures? That’s exactly when the ID.4 delivers. Aside from stylish interiors and exteriors, this EV comes packed with a driving range of up to 280 miles and over 200 horsepower. Fun, practicality, and coolness do come at a price starting at just over $40k, but federal tax credits bring this vehicle below our threshold.
